Citric Acid is used as an occasional additiive for physical developers and intensifiers and stop baths. It is also a buffering agent. Citric acid exists in greater than trace amounts in a variety of fruits and vegetables, most notably citrus fruits.

Citric Acid is often used as a lower-odor stop bath when developing photographic film. Photography film developing solutions are alkaline and the acidic quality of Citric Acid neutralises and stops development of the film.

Citric acid can be used as alow-odour stop bath for film and paper. Use 10g per litre with paper and 5g for film. Take care as the emulsion will melt if you over stop. After placing the film in the bath it only takes a few seconds for the film to stop. When the film becomes ""sticky"" (or at least less slippery) the process of stopping has worked.

The paper stop, using the 10g method will work for about 30 sheets.

It has a formula of C6H8O7.H2O.
