The Nikon F80, from 2000, was built as an entry-level consumer camera for the enthusiast photographer and offers advanced features and for the film photographer who wants great value in an SLR. It has all the crucial features that the (professional) F100 has, e.g. electronic DOF preview, 5 points focusing, thumb pad, custom functions, multiple exposures and three metering systems - but at a much lower price.
Cross-ranged, five-area autofocus system
Choice of 1) Dynamic AF, 2) Closest-subject-priority Dynamic AF and 3) Single Area AF
Focus Tracking with Lock-On
Vari-Brite Focus Area display provides at-a-glance AF-area confirmation
Built-in AF-Assist Illuminator
3D Matrix Metering (with D-/G-type Nikkor lens)
Centre-Weighted Metering and Spot Metering
Four exposure modes ([P], [S], [A], [M])
Built-in Speedlight: guide number 12/39 (ISO 100, m/ft.); 28mm lens coverage
3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash capability
The F80 was the first Nikon camera to feature on-demand grid lines.
The F80 was chosen by Nikon to be the basis for the popular Nikon D100 digital SLR. Fujifilm also used the chassis as the basis for the FinePix S2 Pro and S3 Pro, and by Eastman Kodak for the Kodak DCS Pro 14n and DCS Pro SLR/n.
The camera features many standard PASM exposure modes but also included exposure compensation. The metering has an excellent range at 1 to 20 EV at 100 ISO using an f1.4 lens. An AF illumination feature helps the camera maintain focus in darker lighting conditions. An electronic self-timer mode is available, by pressing a button on near the exposure mode dial.
It is a manual focus SLR but has all normal exposure modes, including manual.
The F80 accepts all F-mount Nikkor lenses except for many pre-AI, and all IX, lenses (these cannot be mounted on the F80 without causing damage). Older non-CPU AI and AIS lenses can be mounted on the camera, but you must set the exposure manually as the camera will not meter through them at all. VR enabled lenses will work as well. AI, AI-S as well as converted AI lenses if able to mount will work but without a light meter function or aperture info. It comes with a 28-80 f3.5 - 5.6 Nikon lens, strap, batteries and three-month warranty.
The shutter is vertical travelling and electromagnetically controlled with speeds of 30 to 1/2000 of a second. Flash synchronization is at 1/125 of a second. The film transport is the motorized automatic type for advance and rewind. The film is automatically advanced to the first frame when the back closed. It is capable of advancing up to 1fps. It uses 2x CR123A batteries which we include.
