Nikon's new D40 embodies where Nikon see the future of digital SLR cameras: more in-camera processing power and less emphasis on participating in the industry's Megapixel race (fact: the higher Megapixel count of an image, the more digital noise it contains). Thus, this camera has the same 6.1 MP that its predecessor had - but features a much larger 2.5 inch LCD.

Designed specifically for ease of use, the D40 lets you use the kind of digital and optical technologies that professionals use without the need to deal with complex functions: 8 Vari-Programs that make taking professional looking images easy. These programmes include 'Auto Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close-up and Night Portrait' - alongside the standard SLR modes (Manual, Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority).
But Nikon's promise of in-camera processing power is not just limited to assisting you in taking the photos - it also extends to in-camera photo retouching:

The small camera size and price tag have been achieved by Nikon doing away with features that the majority of users would not miss, such as:
The autofocus of the D40 works only on Nikon lenses that feature an inbuilt motor (AF-S or AF-I lenses - i.e. all the latest digital lenses). D and G type lenses need to be focused manually.
No depth of field preview
No bracketing
The diameter of centre weighted metering is fixed at 8 mm (rather than selectable between 6, 8, 10 or 13mm).
Included: AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens, which was optically designed for use with Nikon digital SLR sensors. 135 equivalent of 27-82.5mm zoom range.
If you want a digital camera that has the ease of use of a compact camera - but the quality of an SLR, the D40 should be the answer to your prayers.
