"Reviewing John Ingledew's book makes us realize how good it would be to be a photography student again. As senior lecturer in Photography at Saint Martins College in London it most certainly would be inspiring to attend his lectures (if his book is anything to go by).

Aimed squarely at the Art, Design and Photography students we feel that young photographers will find his new book worthy of frequent referral. The style of the book is modern and original but covers the themes and subjects that have always obsessed creative photographers and explains their techniques in a clear and simple way.

These include the meaning and elements of photography - where and how photographs are taken and used. After these two introductory chapters the author introduces the personal aspect of what makes a great photograph(er) and how the individual can create his or her own projects. The fourth chapter covers the science of photography - the equipment, darkroom work and studio and finishes with getting a job in photography and the route to revenue.

The book finishes the remaining 30 out of the 240 total pages by detailing a resource guide that any student would find invaluable e.g. law, health and safety, documentaries, museums and the ""ten stages of a shoot"".

This is one of the most refreshing books on photography we've come across for many years, it retains your interst throughout and one that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to students. In fact, it the closest thing we've seen to being labelled The Student Photographer's Handbook.
