Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley, Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile and The Dam Busters film were all key memories from the year 1954. Also launched that year was a classic film from Kodak - Tri-X.

It is ironic that in a year that Kodak announces the demise of 35mm camera manufacture (although they have done that twice before since 1930) they also celebrate the anniversary of one of the best-loved monochrome films of all time.

It remains their best-selling black-and-white film. Sebastiao Salgado, Alfred Eisenstadt, Henri Cartier-Bresson and John Sexton have all produced magnificent images using this film during the past 50 years. All photographic specialist suppliers know that film is far from dead. In fact, as far as Tri-X is concerned (and HP5 could be included here too), there is just no comparison with digital results when you realize the incredible tonal range, wide exposure and distinctive grain structure you can get from this film. Quality and value also go together in monochrome work.

You can buy Tri-X from Firstcall for only 5p a shot when bought in our ProFilm 35mm cassette version or as a Kodak 30 metre roll. Its little wonder then that black and white photography will be around for many years to come. We look forward to the next 50 years. Think about digital, it has a place to play in picture making, but if its fine art you strive to achieve then your method must be monochrome.
