You use an enlarger timer to turn the enlarger on and off thereby determining the correct amount of light necessary to complete the correct exposure. You need to have determined the speed of paper and aperture of enlarging lens prior to setting the timer.
All enlarger timers have the facility of turning the enlarger on and off with a repeat facility when required. Most are wired in-line to the enlarger and the timer then plugs into the mains.
Timers differ by being electro-mechanical or electronic. Button operated electronic timers like those from Kaiser or Paterson often prove to be more accurate but sometimes suffer through having no relays in their outputs making them less reliable. Electro-mechanical timers, like the Meopta S15, are usually dial-like in appearance with controls counting down like an egg timer - easy for students to follow.
