Canon Film SLRs reviewed by Rodney Bates, Sales Director
Canon is the brand leader by a long way when it comes to selling SLR cameras in the United Kingdom.
If Canon were a car company, their new Canon EOS 300X would be a Ford Focus. In the last 12 months of sales, 300 series sales took over 30% of the total SLR market. They have reached this enviable position by producing cameras that are well-featured, good value and ones that will grow as your hobby does.
Their 300X, 35mm traditional SLR, is a camera that fulfils all aspects of the above.
It has the fastest autofocus in its class, a fast film advance to 2.5 frames per second and a 7-point wide-area AF. The LCD is bigger than most competitors making it very suitable for children. A large number of shooting modes are available and the metering and flash systems are the best on offer.
It comes with a 28-90mm lens, program and aperture/shutter priority with full manual metering exposure modes. You also get evaluative, partial and centre-weighted metering plus depth of field preview and multiple exposure.
The camera has a built-in dioptre adjustment making it suitable for spectacle wearers. However, the best thing about the 300X is that it is future proofed. Learn your skills on this low-cost 300X and then transfer (if you wish) to the world of digital at some time in the future when all your lenses and accessories are instantly usable with the EOS Digital System including E-TTL flash. If you want to get a more versatile camera package, Canon offer the 300X in a twin lens package too. You get the 28-90mm lens complete with the new 90-300mm (and camera bag) at a saving of £90 on the component parts.
