Our opinion:

Fuji's S2980 HD replaces the enormously popular S2950HD.

The zoom range on this camera is fantastic; beginning at a wide angle (excellent for small spaces, like indoor photographs - or outdoor landscapes) and ending in a stunning 504mm super telephoto (for bringing distant objects closer).

The extensive focal range is coupled with multiple image stabilization technologies, so that your images will be as sharp as possible.

It is worth noting that the S2980 can be operated fully manually (as well as automatically, of course) and that the highest ISO rating (6400) shoots at a lower resolution than 14 MP. However, chances are that you will not want to make large prints from twilight/night snapshots anyway, so we wouldn't worry about the reduced resolution in this situation. If you require fantastic night photographs, just mount the camera on a tripod ...

In-camera processing has improved a lot with the S2980. For instance, you can select photos and movies for facebook or YouTube uploads in camera, which will upload as soon as you connect the camera to your computer. Furthermore, in Panorama mode, the camera automatically releases the shutter button when you have a perfect overlap to the previous photo's edge - how clever is that?
