Our opinion:

A winning combination for the novice photographer

It amazing that 12 Megapixels is now what's needed for an entry-level DSLR, but this is no ordinary 'beginner's DSLR' as Canon have made this camera both highly specified and great value-for-money.

The new EOS 1100D is essentially a moulding of the predecessor 1000D model and the more expensive 600D. 720p HD movies, the feature omitted from many starter models is included on the 1100D and this makes all the difference. We also like that movie recording is possible with a quick record button on the back of the camera; no detour via the menu settings required.

This is Canon's lightest and most compact digital SLR ever making it great for students. Thinking of learning, it also has the usual array of scene modes from fully manual, to fully automatic, or a range of semi automated modes in between. Plus Canon's new Basic + 'technology' in the 1100D enables users to adjust the basic camera auto modes according to ambience and lighting type, which is an ideal intermediate step before going semi-automatic or fully manual.

Metering choice is comprehensive as is the ISO range which covers 100 to 6400. Shutter speed range is 30 seconds to 1/4000 and the Picture Style options include 6 different presets or 3 user defined profiles.

All-in-all this is a new camera that beginners will love but also appreciate the more they use it.

63-zone iFCL exposure metering
Advanced iFCL exposure metering dissects a scene into 63-zones before analyzing it to find the perfect combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

6.8cm (2.7 inch), 230,000-dot LCD screen
Compose and review images on a large 230,000-dot LCD screen, which also provides access to the camera's menu system and Quick Control Screen.
