Our opinion:

Nikon's new D3100 is the ideal family camera - and perfect for photography students too.

The new 'guide mode' makes the D3100 the easiest Nikon DSLR to learn photography on. You can make changes on the camera and immediatelly preview the effect this has before taking the photo. For example, you can preview the depth of field (the amount of sharpness/background blur) from the convenience of the LCD, with the set aperture overlayed on the image ... just press the shutter when you like the effect!

Another huge factor in favour of the D3100 is that it features FULL HD at this price - and the convenience of having to press just 1 button at the back of the camera to start recording instantly (see photo above).

The lens included in this kit offers 'Vibration Reduction' (also known as Image stabilisation) which allows you to photograph in light levels up to 3 times lower than conventional cameras. Over time, you may want to add a telephoto lens to increase your reach, like the 55-200.

Please note: The D3100 requires lenses that have a built-in motor (AF-S or AF-I) for autofocus operation.
