Our opinion

Nikon's new entry-level basic D-SLR makes it spectacularly easy to shoot high-quality images and then share them instantly. Included for the first time on a beginner's SLR is Snapbridge, Nikon's Bluetooth technology, which keeps it connected to your smartphone or tablet and automatically sync photos as you shoot. It's the perfect camera for those who want to step up from snapshots to photography, and who care about sharing their images on the go - the photos will be there, ready to share: no fuss, no waiting.

The D3500 also achieves dazzling shots in low light and lets you create portraits with smooth background blur. Beyond photos, Nikon's renowned D-Movie makes it simple to create cinematic-looking video footage. Even novice movie makers can easily film with available light and make subjects stand out against beautiful background blur with a fast Nikkor lens. It takes all Nikon-mount AF-S and AI lenses.
It has a lot of helpful features for newcomers to photography: there is the guide mode plus 6 scene modes, where the camera selects the appropriate settings according to scene mode you selected, i.e. portrait, landscape or sport. Once you have mastered the basics, you may want to try your hand at semi-automatic modes or even go manual.

A successor to the D3400, you'll find both cameras share the same 24.2-megapixel sensor, EXPEED 4 processor and shoot Full HD movies at 1080p (60fps). Apart from a redisgned sensor, the new D3500 has a longer battery life (1550 shots per charge), and is slightly lighter by 30g. The grip is also more substantial, which should not only help with handling overall, but also when using longer and/or heavier lenses. Additionally, the live view button on the D3400's rear is now a lever around the mode dial on the D3500's top plate. 4Kmovies never made it to the improvements though - maybe with the D3600 next year?

** Highly recommended**
