In 2012, Nikon introduced its first 18-300mm lens, the f/3.5-5.6, which weighs 830g.

In 2014, after just two years of development, Nikon have been able to drop almost 300g of weight off their 18-300mm lens offering, with the new f/3.5-6.3 lens. Apart from the physical size difference, it has a slightly smaller maximum aperture at the telephoto end, it has fewer lens elements (16 instead of 19), fewer diaphragm blades (7 instead of 9), no Super Integrated Coating and a smaller filter thread (67mm instead of 77mm).

The resulting f/3.5-6.3 lens is a lot more travel & bag friendly, whilst offering the same fantastic versatility to capture landscapes, portraits, sports and wildlife, stills or video all in one lens.

Lens quality is assured by 5 factors:

1. ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

2. Aspherical (AS) Elements
Utilize non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

2. Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations (rather than a gear system) to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

3. Vibration Reduction (VR)
An in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Nikon tests show that shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower can be employed with VR technology.

4. Internal Focusing (IF)
This lens doesn't change size whilst focusing, as only the internal group elements realign.

5. Auto-Manual (A-M) Mode
Smoothly focus this lens manually through the addition a focus ring that has the same torque as a manual focus lens.

As with all hyper-zoom lenses, there will be sacrifices in AF speed and corner definition/sharpness compared to prime lenses or zoom lenses that have a more traditional / smaller focal range. However, the MTF curves for this lens show less variation of performance between the 10 and 30 lines/mm measurements for this f/6.3 lens than for its 300g heavier f/5.6 cousin, indicating that it suffers less from astigmatism and chromatic aberration at the wide angle.

In essence, this hyper-zoom lens offers Nikon craftmanship and technologies in the most compact form available today.
Manufacturer's Description
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is a 16.7x high-power zoom, 18-300mm (angle of view equivalent to that of a 27-450mm lens in 35mm [135] or Nikon FX format) lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths, from wide-angle to super-telephoto. It is smaller and lighter for greater portability despite its support for a wide range of angles of view, making it a single lens that even those new to digital SLR cameras can use to enjoy capturing a wide variety of subjects, such as everyday snapshots, portraits and landscapes.

What's more, in addition to superior optical performance for sharp and clear rendering throughout the entire zoom range, achieved with adoption of ED lens and aspherical lens elements, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) function that provides camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop* increase in shutter speed. Even when used with a digital SLR camera boasting a high pixel count, the image quality performance enabled by these features is maximized for excellent definition and superior rendering. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is also equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast and quiet autofocusing.

* A 16.7x high-power zoom lens covering the 18-300mm range of focal lengths (angle of view equivalent to that of a 27-450mm lens in 35mm [135] or Nikon FX format) compatible with Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras

* Equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) function for camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop* increase in shutter speed

* Superior rendering capability with an optical design with which ED lens and aspherical lens elements have been adopted

* Support for close-up shooting with a minimum focus distance of 0.48 m

* Equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for extremely quiet autofocusing

* Compact and lightweight with a maximum diameter of 78.5 mm, length of 99 mm, and weight of 550 g, making it conveniently small and light enough for use even on vacation
